You don't need to install anything, you don't even need an harddisk to run a whole free software operating system running out of the box on your PC! Download the ISO-image, burn your own CD, reboot your machine and you'll get back true love ;^)
dyne:bolic is shaped on the needs of media activists, artists and creatives, being a practical tool for multimedia production: you can manipulate and broadcast both sound and video with tools to record, edit, encode and stream, all using only free software!

Dyne:bolic GNU/Linux is a live bootable distribution, an operating system which works directly from the CD without the need to install or change anything on the hard disk. It is user-friendly, recognizes your hardware devices (sound, video, firewire, and USB), and offers a vast range of software for multimedia production, streaming, 3D modeling, photo, peer-to-peer filesharing, Web browsing and publishing, word processing, email, encryption, and networking. It also includes games and a world navigator. It does automatic clustering, joining the CPU power between any other dyne:bolic on the local network, and works on modded XBOX consoles as well.

Surf, stream, edit, encode and broadcast both sound and video, all just in one CD you have simply to boot.

Question, ive never messed with .iso files. How do I burn this to a CD?
David51485
Use Nero:
http://www.nero.com/us/index.html

Make sure you downloaded the files off the server in Binary mode. In other words, you shouldn't have used IE to download the file. You will need to use an FTP Program to download else the whenever you burn the CD, the CD Drive isn't going to run anything on the CD.
Sting
Thanks David. Im downloading dynabolic now.
druid
Got it burned and running right now...this is different from what I've seen of linux so far...I might just have fun with this...

Have you tried it yet, Sting?
Sting
just got home,,,,, will look at it now biggrin.gif
Dodge
Wonder how much different it is compared to Knoppix? Hope it has better support for Video cards...

Sting, have you had a chance to give it a go yet?

One other thing. I've never used bittorent before, so I'm giving it a try now. Had it installed a few weeks now, just hadn't had a chance to use it. So far the downloads seem to be great using it.

For those that haven't heard of it, Bittorent is a Peer to Peer program for downloading OS's, programs etc.... Supposed to be excellant buch of people. They have a link for it on the site Sting posted.
druid
Dodge, I just used the http link and it worked fine...as for your question, I thought it was a bit different than Knoppix...runs well, though. I'm playing with the new Knoppix 3.3 now - very nice biggrin.gif
Sting
well I cant get it to run on my HP laptop... I get a "Kernel panic : Unable to continue" error. I had a friend over yesterday and he ran it flawlessly on his notebook. dunno.gif

Gona give Knoppix a go later today biggrin.gif
Dodge
I may give dynebolic a try.

druid, Knoppix wont run on this system. I have a feeling it may be with my video card, not for sure though..... scr.gif Think I will give knoppix another try once another version or two comes out.

Did everything work out Sting? For some reason, they are not offering a trial of Nero until next week. Easy CD Creator will also burn ISO's to a CD but not as well as Nero.
Dodge
Sting, that could be a bad burn. You could try reburning it at a slower speed. Just to see if it helps.

I'm downloading it now. Hopefully I'll get to try it out tonight.
Dodge
btw, the best way to burn and ISO is to use ISO Burner This is for Win/XP

Installation and Setup
ISO Recorder is distributed as an .msi file - ISORecorderSetup.msi. To install it download the file onto your computer, right-click and select "Install".

To uninstall ISO Recorder use Control Panel/Add Remove Software.

Usage
Recording ISO images
Right-click on an ISO file and select "Copy Image to CD". The wizard will open up. The file name should appear in the "File name" edit box. If, for some reason, wizard cannot use currently selected file or CD recorder, an error message will be provided and "Next" button will be disabled.

Press the "Next" button. Recording operation can be terminated by pressing "Cancel". Note that terminating the actual recording operation can take up to several minutes.

When copy is completed, the wizard will display the "Finish" page.

Creating ISO images
Right-click on a CD drive icon in My Computer and select "Copy CD to Image File". The wizard will open up. Select the target file. Press the "Next" button. Wizard will copy the CD into an ISO file.

When copy is completed, the wizard will display the "Finish" page.

Copying CDs
Right-click on a CD drive icon in "My Computer" and select "Copy Disk to CD". The wizard will open up. The source CD letter should be selected automatically. If, for some reason, wizard cannot use currently selected CD drive or CD recorder, an error message will be provided and "Next" button will be disabled. Note that CD currently cannot be copied "in-place", i.e. using CD-Recorder as both source and destination.

Copying of Audio CDs is not supported either.

Weird. Hmmm....were you downloading those files in Binary or ASCII? You need to download in Binary in order for it to work anyway.
Sting
wsftp is binary by default
Dodge
Yeah it was Binary. Never did find that sucker either. Don't have a clue as to what happened.
druid
A buddy of mine gave me a copy of WS FTP pro but I've never learned/needed it - I always d/l from the http - I've had issues with losing d/l's when they're initially saved to Temp files, but not otherwise. Good Luck, Dodge - if it works for you, the new Knoppix is pretty cool (not a big difference from the old, but maybe enough to run for you...
Dodge
I'll give it a try again before long. I'm waiting til I move though.

Sting,

I have downloaded Dynebolic 3 times and burned it with nero and I still can not get it to boot from the CD. It is the latest version. Nero was set for ISO burn. Any Ideas?confused.gif?

mac scr.gif
Sting
ok, im re-downloading and will try again.
Dodge
pmckinnie, go to My Computer and right click on your CD drive with the cd in. What is listed there? You should have files listed and not just a single ISO file. Tell me what is there...
Dodge
Also, if your using Windows XP you could try ISO Burner. It works much better for burning ISO's than Nero. http://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com/isorecorder.htm
pmckinnie
Dodge,

When I open the cd file there is only 1 file and it is a folder with the same name as the downloaded file. I have downloaded the program you suggested and will try it again. I have to go to another machine to do it so most likely that will not ne done until tomorrow sometime.

HAPPY NEW YEAR

Dodge,

Well I did get the time to try burning it again using your burner. It burned ok and will boot but will not go into the gui mode. Gets past the text bootup and then stops. Have you had anything like this?confused.gif?

Hi pmckinnie, Sorry I didn't answer you sooner. I've been extremely busy and Haven't been online much latley. Just got moved to our new house.

Anyways, I haven't actually been able to give any of these a try except for Knoppix and it doesn't recognize my video card. Sorry I can't be of any help to ya.
pmckinnie
Hi Dodge,

I found that using the latest version of knoppix, I was able to get on the net with no problem. That was using a PC. My laptop doen't like it at all. Most likely a video problem like you have.

I have also tried another cd bootable linux system. Suse 9.0 and it works fine also. It does boot slower than knoppix but both are on the net as soon as they complete their booting.

Keep in touch about this.

cheers mac beerchug.gif
Dodge
I'll have to check out Suse. I'm fixing to download Dynebolic and give it a try. I may try Knoppix again when another version or two comes out.

pretty sad though. i have tried 3 different FTP sites and can't download worth a crap, but am trying an HTTP site now and says it will be done in about 12 minutes. dunno.gif

I am definately hooked now. Got cable access here and I love it. 14 minutes to download 450mb's.... No more dialup for me... Guess living in the city limits does have its good points....lol
Dodge
DB is working great. Nothing to configure and was on the net instantly. Well once I figured out how to find the web browser. Everything loads very quickly. I'm actually impressed with it.

Only thing is that the Scroll wheel on my mouse isn't working. But, I can live with that one...
Dodge
Suse live cd is much better than Dynebolic. KDE with mozilla and konqueror. Works great and is extremely quick and easy to use.
